Over the years we've seen plenty of surface and gestural interface computing systems and prototypes, but nothing mass-market -- nothing consumable, if you will. Microsoft aims to change all that with Surface, its first foray into surface / gestural interfaces; arriving in the form of a 30-inch table-like display, Microsoft envisions its eventual uses as pervasive as imaginable, like ordering beverages from your restaurant table and silently scanning your wine bottle's RFID tag to automatically present information on the vineyard and vintage. Sure, some of it's pretty pie in the sky, but Microsoft is touting Surface's multi-touch, multi-user interface, object recognition and gestural interaction, and it's out to dispel myths of vaporware with limited 2007 rollouts in T-Mobile stores, Starwood hotels, and even Harrah's in Vegas.

“Pretty exciting, eh?” Gates said with a sly smile, when he put his hand down on what looked initially like a low, black coffee table: At the touch of his hand, the hard, plastic tabletop suddenly dissolved into what looked like tiny ripples of water. The ‘water’ responded to each of his fingers and the ripples rushed quickly away in every direction.
How it works
The radical new approach starts with the guts of the device itself. Under the impact-resistant plastic top skin on an otherwise nondescript table hide five infrared scanners, a projector, and a wireless modem. The scanners recognize objects and shapes placed on the top and respond to them accordingly. For example, if the scanners recognize fingers, and the fingers have been placed in color circles that appear on the surface, the projector shows colored lines that follow the tracings and movements of your fingers. Meanwhile, an internal modem sends and receives signals from any electronic device placed on it. All of the hardware is run by a special version of Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows Vista.
To do things on Surface’s tabletop screen, you reach down, touch it and push it. To make the image you see on the screen bigger, spread your fingers. To make it smaller, squeeze your fingers together. To move something into the trash, push it into the trash with your hand. And it allows what Microsoft calls “Multi-Touch” and “Multi-User” interaction — namely, more than one person can interact with it at a time. Try that with your home computer.
One of the most revolutionary aspects of Surface, though, is its natural interaction with everyday objects and technologies. When you place your wi-fi enabled digital camera on the table, for example, Surface ‘sees’ the camera and does something extraordinary: It pulls your digital pictures and videos out onto the table for you to look at, move, edit or send. Images literally spill out in a pool of color.

Certainly, the horizontal, tabletop configuration of Surface raises a variety of possibilities, such as friends gathering for drinks in a hotel lounge and sharing photos and videos.
Inside the Table

Microsoft Surface couples standard PC components with the cameras and projectors necessary to enable surface computing. The demo unit employed a 3-GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and an off-the-shelf graphics card with standard drivers (and Microsoft's own application layer to allow the GPU to help with sensing touch).
The images the PC outputs are displayed on the tabletop surface through a short-throw DLP projector contained inside the table; the lens is just 21 inches from the surface. The rear-projection system produces a 30-inch-diagonal, 4:3-aspect-ratio image at a resolution of 1024 by 768 at 60 Hz.
The table also houses a power supply, stereo speakers, an infrared illuminator, and five overlapping cameras that sense movement on its surface. The cameras feed images of objects on the surface--be they fingers or tagged objects such as game pieces, a Wi-Fi camera, or a digital audio player--back into the computer, where they're processed mostly in the GPU, according to Nigel Keam, one of Microsoft's architects behind Surface.
The specially treated surface's multi-touch capability has no implicit limit, says Keam. "We optimize it for 52 [points of touch], based on the most extreme reasonable scenario we could come up with: Four people with all fingers down, and 12 game pieces in the center."

Just busy trying my luck with couple of fella bloggers maintaining a blog which goes by the name Masti - fun-un-limited (http://blogs.ibibo.com/masti)

Will be out from this space for while until all the enthu dies at the blogger hunt but i promise that i will back with personal posts .. music review .. fundu links to geeky things. Also all the plans to move to the wordpress one are back in the box as spaces has somehow managed to support video publishing feature using flash embedd tags which was the primary reason wordpress looked inviting (as in total liberty to customize anything and everything).

Yey! Airtel joins Windows Mobile. Cant wait to see ppl in India using Office mobile apps.

Hindustan Times - Telecom services provider Bharti Airtel on Monday, announced a strategic tie-up with Microsoft to introduce a new technology platform that will give Airtel users access to a host of Microsoft Office applications and other multimedia products on their mobile phones.

Although the user base is small in India but i hope that it will grow with the booming economy

Targeting an estimated four million Small and Medium Enterprises potential user, the new business solution portfolio with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 will help Airtel users access MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Internet Explorer), multi media functionalities like camera, MP3 and video recording and line up business application like self-force automation on their mobile phone.

Pros and cons of an app on a mobile device -

less memory, less computing power, small UI, less bandwidth but on the other hand ability to call, geographic location, contacts, message, small in size, always with you, more number of mobiles than computers.

To make use of the data available out open like maps, location based data, using the fact that a user is on the go and can make a call or transfer data. for mobile devices its much more than social netwroking sites or data aggregators.

Noted Features:

The next level of ActiveX with the ActiveX opt-in feature that further helps to prevent attacks on potentially vulnerable controls.
The browser will also support a scriptable native version of the XMLHTTP specification, which will allow AJAX-type functionality in the browser without being directly connected to ActiveX as it is in IE 6.
A phishing filter, cross-domain script barriers, International Domain Name Anti-Spoofing protection and a feature that simply deletes browsing history by removing user-identifiable information.
Tabbed browsing, which has long been the hallmark of Mozilla browsers, is integrated into IE proper. Microsoft's implementation of tabbed browsing in IE 7 includes something called Tab Groups which enables user to collect their tabs into a group and open a group with one click. A native toolbar search box is also part of the new browser.

got the link from Rajan. cool concept fo a reality TV. 3 the comapny behind it is the first 3G network provide in UK and is a venture of Hutchison UK. I hope this funda becomes but i feel the providers must have some level of scrutiny before allowing the media to be available for others. this would ensure that the service is not used just to spread adult content and to make money out of it.

What is WebOS?
WebOS is "an Operating System based on the Web". We call it OS, but it doesnt directly deal with hardware, and only limits itself to provide interface. It will run through something like a Web Browser. WebOS is a foundation upon which Web Application Softwares (WebAppS) will run.

Lets first analyze todays Web. There are various services offered on net. Like email, file-sharing, chating, text editing, image editing, music and video playing etc. But they are located at different places, and therefor cannot be conveniently called WebOS. But if i create a simple html page (mywebos.html) and give links to all these services from there... i have created the simplest WebOS. After all our normal OS too does the same thing.. allow us to use different softwares. And in case of Web these softwares become Web Services or WebAppS.

My view on this as a comment on his post.

He talks about issues and functionality that can be made available in near future. this is the thing which ppl are missing. His views are very basic and can be addressed easily and many providers are indeed working on this.

but again when ppl start blowing up situations like there will be no OS, no desktops only WebOS and only ThinClients, that again seems to be like fast runner losing the race situation. Developers and Service providers should think in more detail. It will take time to evolve. web portals like start.com are making a move towards that. google reader is late in this but on the way to lay that foundation.

The problems he discussed about sessions and resource sharing between web apps is surely an issue but can be solved easily. but other factors which can restrict WebOS to come into existence very soon can be...

# internet bandwidth
for you and me its not a problem but lets think about billion ppl who use a computer ..just blow up the situation. you will need a broadband in every home and cubicle. the day is not far but it is not near too .. most of things a normal person need can be provided on web like online music, video, movies, photos ... but it will take time to have that kind of internet fideliy in developing countries.

# much more than email/messenger
on an average a person uses a computer in todays world not only for emails, messenger, photo shraing but also ... for .. programming, watching movies, music, games etc etc ...
this is not impossible but one will defenitely need an OS. how will one play a game like Halo on thin Client?

# monopoly on the web
would everybody from goverment officials to non open sorce programmers to hackers to coorporate workers will keep any confidential data on servers like google (who can one day crawl on tht and provide info to CIA or NASA ;))

# hardware's getting cheap
the more it gets cheap the more ppl will use it. eventually web will not be free. WebOS can be free but what about internet usage. in near future one cannot see tht. today one can get a computer(plus a free OS or windows xp @ 1000 bucks) for not more than 15k and thats more than the broadband bill for an year.
what a thin client will not have than a normal computer? a Hard disk? why would one buy that?

surely this a breakthrough and the web is evolving but again for a technological breakthrough to become widespread phenomenon it need to have a user base. And we all know users does not neccesarily choose the best thing in the world. ;)

Palms will be having Windows Mobile 5 on their machines. thats great news for me!!!

why?

coz my piece of code will be running on that machine as a part of Windows Mobile 5 :)
